A Picasso is a two-character drama of art and intrigue
set in Paris during World War II. Directed by Stuart Carden, it
runs on City Theatre’s intimate Lester Hamburg Studio stage
from November 9 through December 17, 2006. A Picasso unfolds
like a cat-and-mouse game with sly humor and suspense. The setting
is 1941, when German troops occupy France. In a vault beneath a
Paris street, a singular conflict takes place between the ministry
of culture’s Miss Fischer (Rebecca Harris) and the artist
Pablo Picasso (Mark Zeisler). Beautiful and pragmatic, Miss Fischer
interrogates the defiant Picasso, trying to authenticate three portraits.
With his work at stake, Picasso draws Miss Fischer into a negotiation
marked by mutual manipulation, unexpected revelations, and a surprising
final intrigue.
